I decided to become an attorney, due to a chain of events in my life. Had it not been for destiny, I would have wound up on Wall Street.
Like most kids, I did not have a clue what I wanted to do later in life. Just before entering college, I decided to become a doctor. Then between my junior and senior year, I realized I had made a big mistake and had chosen a hobby and not a profession. I wanted more out of life and quickly decided to switch my major and graduated with a business degree. My piers and elders suggested I continue on and obtain a MBA or go onto law school. I decided to do both.
After finishing both degrees, I entered into the business world. I had grandiose plans of heading to New York City and tackling Wall Street to begin an investment-banking career. My plans were soon put on hold due to a little thing called Black Monday in October of 1987. If you weren’t walking on water, Wall Street didn’t want you and since I never mastered walking on water, I decided to stick around here and enter into the business world.
The corporate world was fine for a while, but I grew tired of only being concerned with the bottom line. So, I started practicing law and started being concerned about people instead. After 19 years of practicing, I don’t regret not working on Wall Street. I love what I do.
Just recently, I dedicated my practice to a burgeoning area called elder law. |
Helping seniors these past six years has been quite enlightening. When I worked in the corporate world, I use to get a lot of attorney jokes from clients, now I mostly receive hugs and thank you cards and I prefer the latter. The cards and hugs are just a tangible benefit of the job.
Narrowing my practice has given me a niche. I am able to cover all the little nuances of this area and feel I am much more effective in my work. I hope when someone needs information regarding elder law they know they can turn to me.
When I need assistance and information, I know I can turn to the Indiana State Bar Association. It’s a wonderful organization and has a knowledgeable and helpful staff.
I have utilized the various member benefits, like the continuing education classes and endorsements they offer. These endorsements are not given lightly; the companies they endorse are committed to fulfilling their obligations and providing the best products and services available. An endorsement by the Bar means credibility, you can be sure that someone has done their homework. The insurance agency they work with is a perfect example; I have been extremely pleased with everything they have done for me. I purchase my employee and employer paid medical and life insurance through them. These products are top notch.
By going through the Bar Association for these types of services and products it gives us Attorneys great bargaining power. It’s the best bargain around for obtaining information.
